Biodegradable plastics created from biomass

Bioplastics are plastics which are created from plant material.
Biodegradable plastics can be broken down by microorganisms and eventually fully decompose into water and carbon dioxide, making them friendly to people and the environment.
Japan Cornstarch has succeeded in developing a biodegradable bioplastic made primarily from cornstarch, marketed under the brand name "Cornpole".
Cornpole is used for a wide range of applications, for example a material for ballpoint pens, agricultural mulching films, and paints.

  1. Cornpole are a new type of natural material made primarily from cornstarch
  2. Despite having cornstarch as the main component, it is water resistant.
  3. It contains no harmful substances.
  4. It fully biodegrades.
  5. It can be composted.
  6. The heat of combustion is less than that of petroleum plastics.
  7. It can be used as-is with general plastic machining equipment.
  8. It is highly compatible with other biodegradable polymers such as polyester, PHBV, PLA, and PCL, making it possible to provide a high variety of new composite materials.
  9. It can be also supplied in powder form.
  10. It is soluble in organic solvents, such as ketone and ester.
